Weeknight Workshop: Assistant Directing 101
—Published on 3rd Jun, 2021.
The assistant director- the AD- is one of the most critical crew positions on a production. If you’ve ever been on a set or have eagerly watched a behind-the-scenes video or documentary on one of your favourite films or shows, you’ve probably seen the 1st AD and have wondered who they are: the ones at the center of the action, headset or walkie in hand with a ninja-like focus and determination. They ensure a shoot is run well!
FILMCO is excited to present a two-session workshop on assistant directing with 1st AD Shane D. Hosein whose credits include National Geographic’s “Locked Up Abroad” and Shaun Escayg’s upcoming film “Ikarus” among others. The AD is the right hand of the director; they work with them and all heads of department to plan and execute a well-run and on-time shoot- and Hosein knows it well.
In this Zoom workshop open to new and emerging filmmakers as well as to those already established but looking to take on the role of AD, Hosein will teach participants about the key roles and responsibilities of the assistant director. He will also discuss the skills needed to handle the position, and the AD’s function across the pre-production, production and post-production stages of filmmaking among other things. We will also look at the scalability of this role across various genres from narrative to documentary and music videos.
