The Filmmakers Collaborative of Trinidad and Tobago (“FILMCO”) is pleased to partner with the Contemporary Choreographers’ Collective (COCO) Dance Festival and venue partner The UWI Film Programme to offer you this exciting workshop. The workshop will be hosted at the UWI Film Programme, St. Augustine on November 8, 2023 from 6:00pm-7:30pm and is open to any aspiring or professional filmmaker. Join Anne Wharton for a workshop exploring strategies for capturing the movement of the body on video. Learn strategies for executing your aesthetic goals and communicating your ideas to actors and dancers. Please bring a recording device such as a smart phone or tablet for filming exercises.
Learning outcomes:
- Recognize different types of movement on film such as documentary, improvised, and choreographed scenarios.
- Identify different camera shots and angles and discuss their advantages and disadvantages when capturing movement on video.
- Demonstrate the ability to create prompts for movers to accomplish your aesthetic goals while keeping your actors/dancers safe.
Anne Wharton is a dance filmmaker, performer, scholar, and educator. Working in front of and behind the camera, Wharton has collaborated with dance companies both as a dancer, choreographer, and director. In addition to producing dance film, process documentaries, and movement diaries, Wharton also incorporates films in evening-length theatrical productions, as seen in the premiere of Perspectives: Thoughts on Landscape at the New Music Festival in Lubbock, Texas. Encouraging artists from a variety of backgrounds to work with movement and film, Wharton specializes in teaching introductory dance film workshops. Pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts at Texas Tech University, Wharton teaches across arts disciplinesand is currently working on three film projects funded by a Fulbright grant to Trinidad & Tobago.
